Upward Mobility Workforce Study

HPGM commissioned a study in partnership with the Wisconsin Policy Forum in order to find out more about the role of Hispanic workers in the regional economy. The data gathered helps clarify where Latinx workers stand in the areas of educational attainment and income level.

KEY FINDINGS

THE BIG PICTURE

The Hispanic population increased by 75,000 people since 2000, accounting for the totality of Milwaukee’s population growth

From 2007-2017, the share of Hispanics in the region with at least a bachelor’s degree increased from 10.5% to 14.7%

HISPANICS ARE:

Underrepresented in high-wage occupations, defined as $60,000+ annual salary

Still nearly 15.7% less likely than non-Hispanics to earn a bachelor’s or advanced degree

Employed at more than double the rate of the overall population in production, food preparation/serving, building/groundskeeping, and other maintenance occupations

WHAT'S NEXT?

HPGM is committed to continue working with our university and corporate partners to close the achievement gap reflected in the study by: eliminating financial barriers and opening the doors to internships, mentoring, networking and leadership opportunities.
